Creating An Effective Workforce Development Plan

Since industrialization shifted its first gears and powered operations by mechanical means, there has always been a need among manufacturers to consider what is coming next. What new and improved machinery will enhance production and efficiency while, dare one dream, reduce cost? Today, it’s much the same as digitization has many operations in flux, attempting to transition from older systems to new, better ones.

Another thing that remains consistent among manufacturing companies is the need to ensure a competent workforce. A workforce that has the skills needed to not only perform current processes but also to adapt quickly to new ones provides companies with reliable support. A reliable workforce isn’t something that can be left to chance. Today’s manufacturers understand that a high-quality team needs nurturing, ongoing training and development, targeted recruiting, and much more to ensure that it continues to meet the company’s workforce goals.

Manufacturer Spotlight

Just over 1 year ago, Campfire Coffee Co open their 1^st brick-and-mortar location in Tacoma, Washington. Quincy Henry and his wife Whitni run Campfire Coffee, an outdoors-themed café that has “a social goal of getting diverse groups in nature.” Henry has been vocal about how rare it is to see Black people in ownership roles in the outdoors and in coffee. He and his wife are trying to change that, one cup at a time. They roast coffee over a campfire, the way people did it for hundreds, maybe thousands, of years before industrial roasters became a thing.

Their story is storybook - after an unexpected layoff and an unexpected work injury back-to-back, the journey to the future wasn’t clear. But a long conversation driving through the mountains of Utah and Eastern Oregon after the Thanksgiving holiday led them to this simple but exciting idea: Open a coffee shop that is outdoorsy (easy enough) with a social goal of getting diverse groups in nature. Need help managing your COVID Protcol? Join Washington State Employers that have already implemented the IHME's Early Detection Program. This no-cost tool lets employers and employees work together to prevent the spread of COVID-19. As part of Washington State’s Safe Start Program, the Early Detection Program is provided to employers at no cost and is easily launched as an app or web-based platform.
